9/11 memories

This posting is a little different, but this day is close to my heart and I needed to share my grief and hope.

Alan Jackson asked “where were you when the world stopped turning?”  Well, like thousands of other Americans, I was at work, and overworked and stressed.  I was working easily 70 hour weeks, big time overtime, and the boss had quit that week, so we were without a leader and trying to keep the ship going.  I had a stack of faxes at least 8 inches thick that I was working on and getting so frustrated at the lack of what was needed to do anything with them.  I griped a little and a co-worker told me, “well, you could always fly a plan into a building to get their attention.”  She doesn’t even remember making that statement, but it caught my attention.  I looked up at the tv screen to see the second plane hit, and looked around to see what channel and the name of the movie – only, it wasn’t a movie, it was real time news streaming the horrible, unbelievable actions of a group of people committing these atrocious acts in the name of their prophet.  My heart stopped.  There was so much pandemonium, so much hysteria, that we could not make local phone calls to check on loved ones.  My sister called me, panicking at the thought of my being so far away from the family when the world as we knew it was coming to an end.  I called my mom – didn’t we all?  I got a call from a friend’s mom, who couldn’t get through to her daughter, who had a son that was in the active military and was struggling to connect with his unit to go, could I help?  I called mom again, asked her to call as I couldn’t call locally, and with those 3 way calls, we arranged for me to go and get her after work as we were locked in until it was deemed safe to go.  I started helping to take incoming calls, as they started coming in to us in waves, one woman screaming at me that we (the company I worked for) had to do something to help those brave firefighters as their boots were melting off their feet, couldn’t we get them something to keep their boots from melting?  I watched the tiny figures of people jumping out of the burning buildings and then watched with all in absolute, stunning horror as the buildings fell, one after the other.  I heard on the radio, the song (9/11 song from God) that said –“ I’m here and holding out my hand, just take it.”  I was one of the many that Alan mentioned that lined up to donate blood, money, time.  I read the stories, watch the documentaries, cry.  And pray.  So many brave people – the “let’s roll” guy, the phone operator that kept the phone line open so that they could hear if there was any info that could be used to help anyone, the people that helped the handicapped down those stairs when they felt that they were facing certain death with no elevators.  Too many to name, too much pain.  Those that tried to capitalize on it by price gauging at the gas pumps, in the grocery stores, and those that didn’t and went out of their way to help.
I am part of the generation that saw American soil attacked, our homeland.  Another case of “a day that will live in infamy” for so many.  But I also stood with Toby Keith as an “Angry American” and with Darryl Worley in “Have you forgotten.”  No, I have not forgotten, and I am an angry American, who will stand and defend her homeland, her family, her home and the right to practice her faith.
So, where were you?  And what are you doing about it now?
Father, please be with all those who lost family, friends, loved ones, be with those who are sick now from doing whatever they could then and took the ash into their bodies.  Be with those with the memories of the horror of identifying all those, locating all the artifacts, and wanting to have a centralized place of mourning.  Father, be with us all in this day of memories and sorrow.

Draw the line! And open the door!

Draw the line!  And open the door!
Referencing Girlfriends in God Aug 21, 2012:
“I heard someone once say that a woman defines romance as the feeling of being continually pursued. What do you think about that?”
What do I think about that?  WOW!  I don’t feel pursued except by trouble.  Trouble pursues me with a vengeance, and I keep running and keep fighting and getting nowhere fast.  Sound familiar? Listen to this:
Disciple – Draw the line video & lyrics
Another crash, another fall, another failure
Another choice I don't want to remember
Been here too many times
Every day's another fight
I'm at war with the person I could be
Give me a chance and I'll mess up a good thing
This sounds like my life!  I so understand those feelings of failure.  Can’t keep the checkbook in the black, never have enough money for bills.  And for most of those bills, it is to keep someone else happy.  Many know that I support my family, oftimes to my own detriment.  And for what?  Is making this person or that company happy with me for this moment going to get me anywhere?
Third Day – What good? video & lyrics
What good is it a man

To gain the whole world
And to forfeit his soul
They’re right – it’s getting me nothing, really.
Building 429 – Listen to the sound video & lyrics
Are you in over your head
Are you in water so deep you're drowning
Do you think you've been left
And there is no one to feel your hurting
Well, everybody has been there
And everybody's felt lost
If you're in over your head
Lift it up, lift it up
But there is, and it goes right back to that woman’s definition of romance – God is ALWAYS there!  Remember that picture of Jesus standing in front of that door and knocking?  There is no handle for Him to open, He has to wait for YOU to open that door, and if that isn’t continual pursuit I don’t know what is!  See, He did what Disciple in that first song says they are gonna do – Draw the line.
this is where i draw the line
this is the where the old me dies
light a match, let it burn, kiss it goodbye,
giving up what i was
this is where i draw the line
When I first heard the song, I had two immediate images – one of the women pulled out of her lover’s bed and taken to Jesus for judgement.  She was an adulterous, and there was no doubt in this instance she was guilty.  But, He knelt, and while he was not really drawing a line in the sand, He was!  “Let he who has no sin cast the first stone.”  There was only one person on the sinless side of the line and it sure wasn’t anyone in that crowd!  And the second image – Jesus on the cross and saying “It is finished.”  He drew that line!  No more death!  What a line and what a song!
George Strait – Love’s gonna make it alright video & lyrics
Girl you had one of those days
Seem like they been going around
You are a long way from being where you want to be.

When the world isn’t going your way
Or ever bad luck is getting you down.
Honey I will be right here for you with open arms,
you can run to me.

While this song isn’t speaking about running to God, that is how I am going to take and use these lines.  So, you’ve had a rough day/week/month/year, He is always right there with you, constantly wanting your attention so that He can rain love down on you.  That bubble bath?  His warm arms.  That chocolate or wine?  Max Lucado said it – “Come thirsty.”
So, do you feel loved and pursued?  Do you see that no matter how hard you struggle, for Him, the only thing you need to do is open the door, sit down and drink your fill.

You’ve got a friend . . .

I was bopping along to the radio this morning when God decided to hit my upside the head again, and He does it in such unique ways and with tools you would never have thought could be turned to that use.  Check this song out, blast from the past!
Depeche Mode – People are people lyrics & video
Why should it be that we can’t get along?  We all put our pants on the same way, bleed the same color, and for the most part, believe in the same God – what else is there?  We are to be the example to others, and leave the judging up to the ultimate and final One.
Casting Crowns – If we are the body lyrics & video
Everybody needs a friend, needs to know that they matter to someone.
James Taylor – You’ve got a friend lyrics & video
I know that I never think of Him that way, but the best friend we’ve got?
"What a friend we have in Jesus" lyrics & video
Is it so hard to reach out?  What do we do when we need someone?  We ALL need to reach out from time to time and know that someone is there to catch us and help us to the next step.  (ok, for this one, there are so many songs that come into play!)
Manafest – Every time you run lyrics & video
Casting Crowns – Prayer for a friend lyrics & video
Matthew West – Forgiveness lyrics & video
Third Day – Call my name lyrics & video
Third Day – Cry out to Jesus lyrics & video
People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime....
When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person.
When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed.
They may seem like a godsend and they are.
They are there for the reason you need them to be.
Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end.
Sometimes they die.
Sometimes they walk away.
Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand.
What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done.
The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.
Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn.
They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh.
They may teach you something you have never done.
They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy.
Believe it, it is real.
But only for a season.
LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons, things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation.
Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. (unknown)
Casting Crowns – Jesus, friend of sinners lyrics & video
Sidewalk Prophets- Live like that lyrics & video
Prayer of Saint Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.
(It was rather loud in my head this morning with all this music running around!)

even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye

2012 has not been a good year for me.
·         The house and barns were broken into and the value of items lost over $1000
·         I said goodbye to my tearcatcher and boon companion of 18 years.
·         Financial burdens have hit my family almost to the breaking point, possibly ending with my sister losing her house.
·         Late frosts took our apple crop.
·         Late frosts and no seasonal rain have almost completely killed my gardens.
·         Autumn is looming about 2 months earlier than expected as geese are flocking and mornings are cool.
It has been a hard year and it isn’t over yet.
Ever felt this way, left out in the cold?  Problems feel like a tidal wave about to drag you under?  And are they the result of someone else’s actions?  This verse hit me between the eyes the other day:
King James Version (KJV) Colossians 3:13
Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye
Man, that hits don’t it!  We can say, but they just keep doing it, but so do we, don’t we?  And He keeps on forgiving.  We forget that, forget to keep saying thank you!
And also, we need to keep remembering who we have to thank!
This was in a book I read, not the best book, but this line is going to haunt me:
“The last kind words said to Jesus were by a thief - and they were the first into heaven with him.”
I want to get my silver, or golden, invitation, don’t you?  I can’t wait to sing this:
Well I know it wasn't you who held me down
Heaven knows it wasn't you who set me free
So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains
And we never even know we have the key

But me, I'm already gone
And I'm feelin' strong
I will sing this vict'ry song
'Cause I'm already gone
Yes, I'm already gone
And I'm feelin' strong
I will sing this vict'ry song
'Cause I'm already gone
Yes, I'm already gone
Already gone
Montgomery Gentry - Damn Right I Am lyrics and video
Am I proud of where I’m from
How I was raised my daddy’s ways in this country that I love
Am I proud that all I see
Is black and white, wrong or right, and there ain’t no changin me
Am I proud of where I stand
Damn right I am!

If you can’t say something nice . . .

I used to get so sick of that expression, and now it’s been replaced with something you can find on a t-shirt I’m about ready to buy for my niece – kwityurbitchin!
Tim McGraw - Angry All The Time. W/ Lyrics.
I love this song, it’s so poignant and says so much.  What makes anyone think that they might have it so much worse than anyone else?  “Walk a mile in my shoes” and the whole perspective changes.  It’s hard to try and look at the world through someone else’s eyes, and you will never completely get it anyway, as that is not your all-the-time reality.  If there are hungry children, it doesn’t matter where they are, the pain in their bellies is the same, regardless of geography!  Or illness!  Sick is sick is sick!  I heard this song on his new cd, and it just smacks you in the face with reality:
Kenny Chesney-Sing 'Em Good My Friend:
That line, “They say time can heal, but time can't heal everything” and then “We're all gonna die, someday.”
Ain’t it the truth?  I cried when I heard this song, but gently.  Have you ever cried gently, just for the beauty of something even when it hurt?  Kinda strange, huh?  This song goes on and addresses the prayer I put in my blog posting: Shouldn't I be above this?.
While we are all walking our own paths, and are carrying our own crosses, that expression all roads lead to Rome?  If we are on the Christian path, those paths and those crosses get us to Calvary!
Here’s one (this new cd is amazing and really made me think through so many of these heartwrenching songs!):
This time I'm gonna hug him
Instead of just shaking hands.
Gonna tell him that I love him
While he still knows
Who I am.
Alzheimer’s, to me, is a demon!  Satan loves this hateful disease that can take devout little old women and make them cuss and swear, or take a loving poppa (like my dad) and make him look you in the eye and have no clue who you are.  I’ve been through that!  And IT HURTS!!!  So, this song, this song sucker punched me!
My cousin posted this to her friends and family and I would advise EVERYONE to do it:
If you have someone special in your life..tell them. Thank them. Let them know they are appreciated...never take them for granted...I love my [you fill in the name]
So –
The reasons that I can't stay don't have a thing to do with being in love
And I understand that lovin a man shouldn't have to be this rough
You ain't the only one who feels like this world left you far behind
I don't know why you gotta be angry all the time
So don’t.  That simple, a mental decision to “have a nice day.”  In this case, it IS all in the mind.  Your decision.  And mine.

Shouldn't I be above this?

It’s not fair, don’t I do good things?  Don’t I deserve a break?
Sound familiar?
I read this in one of my devotionals this morning (and I hope she doesn’t mind my using her words!):
"Shouldn't I be above this? I asked myself. Shouldn't I be able to deal with rejection and deceit without getting angry? Why can't I rejoice in my trials like those first followers of Jesus?" (from God Never Wastes Our Pain By Glynnis Whitwer)
Don’t we get tired of hurting, being rejected or taunted?  And to be so strapped financially, and rejoice in it?!?  Isn’t that asking a bit much of anyone?!?
Psalm 91:1-2 offers a rousing yes!  “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”  The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.  I will protect those who trust in my name!”
This is one that I am standing on right now.  More bills than pay, and how to get to work to get more pay that still won’t be enough to cover those bills.  Again, sound familiar?
On My Own by Ashes Remain lyrics or video

I heard this one on the radio this morning, and it ties it all together for me, so am still trying to stand on His protecting and rescuing me, trusting in Him to help me gather all those loose strings to make the beautiful tapestry that will be my life and the path leading to Him and the final and wonderful answer – when He calls me by His name for me and only me!
Casting Crowns - Voice of Truth lyrics or video
Philippians 4:7 says “His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”
I read this in one of my online devotionals yesterday and boy, did it back a punch!  I know that life on this earth will be hard, and it not supposed to be easy and that we need to live in Him, and this verse hit it!
Every heard this prayer:
Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the jerk who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and was rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.
Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can't make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.
Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (who really ought to get a job)! is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.
Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together.
Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love.  It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear.  Open our hearts not just to those who are close to us, but to all humanity.  Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love.
Puts it all in perspective, doesn’t it?  It may seem that the other person might not have it so hard as we, could/should be doing more/better than they are, but do we really know what is happening in their lives any more than they in ours?  And now, knowing this, knowing that you are the mirror reflecting the Light living in you, how can you not, even with your own trials and tribulations, not show how you are blessed by extending a hand.  That hand could be reaching out with so much potential to change a life.
So - Casting Crowns Praise You in this Storm lyrics or video?
Sing through those tears, they can’t be seen in the rain!  But YOU can, and what is going to be seen and heard is PRAISE and BLESSINGS!

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life . . .

Ever heard this song

Doesn’t necessarily make me feel overly wonderful as I was a wife at one point and can only hope that this song was not a criteria!  But my one daily devotional made me think about the flip side as well.  Think of all the “beautiful people,” all those movie starts or sports starts.  They never get a moment’s peace!  And while no one is following me around with a camera, I don’t seem to get a break either.
This devotional went on to state that Jesus was there for us always!  Even when he tried to get away for a moment’s peace by crossing the lake in a boat, when he landed with the disciples on the other side, they were waiting for him! (Matthew 8:18)
See, even he couldn’t get away, as when he got to the other side, there were 2 demon-possessed men on the shore.  (Matthew 8:28).

Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” (Matthew 8:20)  (Matthew is really hitting me right now, can’t you tell?)

But, then I read the below in an online devotional:
In the midst of caring for those you love, don't neglect yourself. You are valuable and important. You are worth a little treat. You have a big job and need to be refreshed. (Proverbs 31, 06/19/12, by Glynnis Whitwer)

So, don’t neglect myself – that’s hard! Jesus did get away from time to time, just to pray and spend time with His Father and ours, to refresh himself.  But, we were told:

Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’”  This is the first and greatest commandment.   And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ (Matthew 22:37-38)

WOW!  So, we need to take time.  How is it that it is so easy to keep giving to others (neighbors), but not doing as commanded and loving ourselves as much as we are loving those around us?

I’m also reading Max Lucado’s “In the Grip of Grace” right now, and there is a section on page 7 that asks which of the characters listed do I most resemble.  Based on the charts he laid out on pages 8-9, I fall between the legalist and the Christian.  I always “feel guilty”, I’m always tired (“weary”), I feel that “I can’t work enough”, I am “stressed-out”, and surely don’t feel worthy of grace (“not me”).  But – I “know my Father”, I know that “I may be bad, but I’m forgiven”, and “I can’t thank Him enough.”

So, wandering all over in this one, how do we be happy?  How do we not feel guilty, tired, stressed-out, how do we feel worthy of the grace given?

Hebrews 4:16
Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

We are all going to have issues. I don’t think anyone would ever say that I am one of the “beautiful people,” I was married and must not have been ugly enough as I am not married any longer! ;-)  These are things that we must go through to be purified.  Peter asked that “the thorn be removed.”

2 Corinthians 12:9
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

So, His grace is enough.  Ever heard that story "I wish you enough love"?

That is the way to look at life and the speed bumps – I must be getting this so that I have enough!
